September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month and SlimGenics hopes to bring the issues around the childhood obesity epidemic to light. In today’s world, it seems outdoor playtime and well-balanced meals are being replaced with technology and fast food. More than 23 million children and teenagers in the U.S. are overweight or obese, a statistic that medical experts consider an epidemic. It’s clear that poor nutritional habits and a lack of exercise are taking a toll on the health of our nation’s youth.
To say that obesity statistics have soared in recent years is an understatement. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6-11 who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of obese adolescents aged 12-19 years has increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same time period. In total, 1 in 3 children and adolescents in the US are overweight or obese.
When you consider the economic and social costs that are associated with childhood obesity and the fact that unhealthy habits learned at a young age will continue into adulthood, it becomes quite apparent that the childhood obesity epidemic is becoming a dangerous cycle for our youth. Childhood obesity has both immediate and long-term effects on the health and well-being of children. Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases including cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
The good news is childhood obesity is preventable through proper diet and exercise. The SlimGenics Foundation donates a portion of sales to organizations that work to combat and raise awareness for childhood obesity. We also offer NØbesity, a Youth Nutritional Program, tailored to help children and adolescents learn about nutrition in a safe, healthy manner and create habits that will help them make healthy choices long term. Together, we can take the necessary steps to become positive role models of a healthy lifestyle our youth. We must start learning and promoting nutritious eating, well-balanced meals and exercise through increased activity. By investing in the health and wellness of our future generations we are ensuring they have the opportunity for healthy, happy lives.
To combat the childhood obesity epidemic, SlimGenics is offering $49 youth enrollments or FREE youth enrollments with an adult enrollment in our NØbesity youth healthy eating program.
