September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and there is no better time to do what you can to make a difference. More than 23 million children and teenagers in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. While obesity rates have soared among all age groups in this country, obesity is a particularly grave concern for children.
Childhood obesity puts nearly one third of America’s children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke–conditions usually associated with adulthood. There are lots of things you can do to affect change in our youth’s health, beginning at home. Making healthy eating and living a family affair is the simplest and most important way you can make a difference in the life of a child. Small changes really add up. Provide fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks instead of processed foods. Cook together as a family! Getting everyone involved in meal preparation makes eating together even more enjoyable. Better yet, try gardening together–produce doesn’t get any fresher than your own backyard!
Making these small changes will not only improve the life of you and your family, but your kids’ friends might be over at your house and they pick up a new fruit or vegetable they’ve never had before, love it and ask their parents to pick some up at the grocery store…it really is amazing how one good decision borrows another.
Let’s keep that trend going. You can feel good when you choose to purchase SlimGenics products. Not only are they designed to support a healthy lifestyle, but also with your purchase, a percentage of proceeds go to the SlimGenics Foundation. The foundation sponsors programs that help combat our nation’s growing childhood obesity problem. Read about our partnership with 2040 Partners for Life here.
