May 11-17, 2014 is the National Women’s Health Week! The goal of this national observance is to empower women to make their health a priority, and to help women learn what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. To celebrate this amazing week of health and wellness, we’re going to talk about one of the biggest concerns that women have about their healthy diet – fat.
There is so much information floating around about fat that is, well, untrue. Yes, consistently eating foods that are high in fat will lead to weight gain; however, certain fats are actually essential for proper nutrition, healthy weight loss, and overall health and wellness! The fats found in foods like avocado and salmon are perfect examples of the good fat that your body needs in order to support a healthy and active lifestyle. Additionally, there are Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) that are – you guessed it – essential for our bodies to function properly.
Two of the most important EFA’s are linoleic acid, which is more commonly known as omega-6, and alpha-linoleic acid, or omega-3. Both omega-6 and omega-3 offer EFA health benefits that are critical for the regulation of inflammation, pain, blood pressure, fluid balance, blood clotting, heart health, nerve function and gut health.
For women specifically, EFA’s are essential for women’s health as many women have reported that they help to alleviate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps, as well as pregnancy-related issues and fetal development. Some studies suggest that people who don’t get enough of these essential fatty acids are more likely to have bone loss, leading to osteoporosis.
These good fats are probably sounding better by the minute!
While we need omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids in order to function properly, our bodies cannot make them and instead must rely on our diets and supplementation. Consuming wild-caught salmon and other oily fish, avocado and even flax seeds are great ways to introduce your body to more EFA’s throughout the day! It is also recommended to take a high-quality EFA supplement, like Omega-Slim™ Essential Fatty Acids, in order to ensure that your body is getting enough of these necessary fats.
For the best EFA health benefits, the key is in the balance of omega-6 and omega-3. What we love about our Omega-Slim supplement is that it contains a proprietary blend of the highest quality omega-3 and omega-6 oils to ensure a healthy balance of the two.
In addition to the amazing EFA health benefits already mentioned, consistently consuming healthy amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 can improve the appearance of hair, skin and nails, increases the metabolism and inch loss, reduces storage fat and cellulite, and aids in normal brain function! It’s okay to love these fats – we sure do!
