How much sleep do you get per night? If you’re like the majority of Americans, you aren’t getting enough. And, believe it or not, that lack of sleep affects weight loss and can show up on your waistline.
Several hormones that regulate the body’s use of energy are released during sleep, and getting too little sleep, or having interrupted sleep, can disrupt this process. Ghrelin is the “go” hormone that increases hunger and gives your body the green light to eat. Leptin is the “stop” hormone that decreases hunger and tells your brain when to stop eating. When you are sleep deprived, your body produces more Ghrelin and less Leptin, causing the body to “go” and eat more.
The result is an increased craving for food and a decreased feeling of fullness after eating. Combine these feeling with sleep deprivation and you’re likely to also be a fairly unhappy camper.
Fortunately, there are several ways you can take action to improve your sleep, and your hunger hormone balance!
- Keep a regular sleep cycle. By regulating your sleep pattern each night, your body will learn when it is time to sleep and wake. Be sure to go to bed at the same time each night, and wake at the same time each morning.
- Make your bedroom your sleeping sanctuary. Dim the lights, block out any excess noise and keep the room clean. Avoid doing work in bed to allow the space to be all about sleep.
- Stay away from caffeine before bedtime. Drinking caffeine close to bedtime will affect your ability to fall asleep.
